An Easter egg hunt is one of the best holiday traditions we remember from our childhood. It’s a fun family activity and if we were lucky that year, we wound up getting a second Easter egg hunt at Grandmas’s house. As an adult, it’s fun to stuff Easter eggs with candy and coins and hide them for children to find. We made these Easter egg cookies for the adults to enjoy while watching the children search for the eggs, however you could certainly include a few in Easter baskets too. Be sure to include some decorated Easter egg cookies with your holiday celebration.

Supplies needed for Easter egg cookies:

  • Classic rolled sugar cookie recipe
  • Royal icing recipe in colors orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink
  • Cookie cutters shapes: Egg and plaque

Steps to make Happy Easter plaque:

Outline cookie using pipe consistency icing.
Fill cookie using flood consistency icing. Set aside to dry for 1 hour.
Write HAPPY using a 1.5 tip, write Easter using a 2 tip. Both use pipe consistency icing.
Add multi color fringe using pipe consistency icing.

Steps to make Easter eggs: We made all the Easter eggs using a wet on wet technique for decorating with royal icing. This means that immediately after you flood the cookie with a base color you begin adding details. The icing will sink into the base color.

Immediately add vertical stripes starting from the top working downward. Using a different color, add alternating stripes. The outside stripes are gently curved with the shape of the egg.

Immediately add stripes and polka dot decoration. To add a flower in the center add a circle of icing and drag a scribe tool from the outside to the center of the circle on the top and sides. Finally add a pistil to the flower.

Add polka dots of various sizes and colors. You can layer the colors as shown above.
