Since we are staying gnome for the holidays, we thought we’d bake up some cookies to send to family members we can’t be with. This set was inspired by the winter gnomes, Nordic decor and Christmas plaids that are popping up this season. With a few simple wet-on-wet techniques, you can create a variety of woolen-like details to give each of your cookies a different personality. The simple red, white, grey and charcoal color palette is striking and festive.
Supplies needed for Staying Gnome for the Holidays:
- Classic sugar cookie recipe

Steps for making gnome cookies:
Start by outlining the gnome hat and body with pipe consistency icing in a variety of colors. Fill the body and hat with flood consistency icing. While the flood is still wet, add plaid, Shetland, or Nordic snowflake pattern as shown above to either the hat or body. Set aside for at least 15 minutes to allow icing to set up.
For gnome with beards, pipe and fill a full beard at the base of the hat over the body using flood consistency icing. Let the beard set for at least 15 minutes. Next, pipe a large nose over the beard at the bottom of the hat with flood consistency icing. If desired, pipe mustache with flood consistency icing at the base of the nose.
For gnome with braids, pipe and fill two triangles at the base of the hat over the body using flood consistency icing. Let the top of the braids set for at least 15 minutes. Next, pipe an upside-down tear shape at the bottom of the braid. Let this set for 5 minutes. Continue to pipe upside-down tear shapes, criss crossing over each other one at a time allowing icing to set each time. Once braid nearly reaches the bottom of the body, add a ponytail tie in a contrasting color by piping a horizontal line. Add a few vertical lines for the bottom of the braid. Finally, pipe a large nose over the body at the bottom of the hat with flood consistency icing.
Have fun with it! Mix and match the different patterns, hairstyles, beards, and mustaches.
