Spend Valentine’s or Galentine’s Day decorating sugar cookies. This is an opportunity to be productive, creative and romantic all at once. You can make it a fun date night activity with a special someone. Or, gather the girls for a little fun and create your heart shaped masterpieces together. For this project, we used traditional Valentine colors to start but then threw in black royal icing for a little edge. The colors are blended to create a marble effect on the cookie when they are dipped in the royal icing. We like the way it looks, what do you think? Check out the YouTube video at the bottom of this post to see how we made Valentine’s Date Night Cookies.

Supplies needed to make Valentine’s Date Night Cookies:

  • Classic rolled sugar cookie recipe
  • Royal icing recipe in colors white, black, red, light and dark pink
  • Cookie cutter: any heart shape you like, we used a scalloped shaped heart like this one here
  • Scribe tool or toothpick

Steps to make pink and white marbled hearts

Start with a small bowl like a cereal bowl, add flood consistency white royal icing.
Next add any color in a zig zag random pattern.
Now add another color in a zig zag pattern across the top of the first one.
Using a scribe tool or toothpick, with the tip dipped in the icing swirl in a clockwise motion working from the center outward. Just do this once so the colors combine a little.
Now you are ready to dip your cookie. Gently place it on tip of the royal icing, be sure to get all the edges.

Next, pull the cookie straight up shaking off excess icing and use the edge of the bowl to gently rub off the extra icing.
The two tone pinks with the white icing are so pretty!

Steps to make black marbled hearts:

Start with a small bowl like a cereal bowl, add flood consistency white royal icing.
Next add black royal icing in a zig zag pattern.
Add red icing in a zig zag pattern across the black icing.
Now add the light pink icing in the same zig zag pattern.
Using a scribe tool or toothpick, with the tip dipped in the icing swirl in a clockwise motion working from the center outward. Just do this once so the colors combine a little.
Repeat the steps to dip the cookie and look at the result!
